When Maarten and Nadine Schaddelee attended the opening of the Bob Wright Centre for Ocean, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences in 2008 they were touched by the passion and dedication to our oceans that the speakers displayed. The Schaddelees decided to dedicate two sculptures that will serve as reminders of our need to be good stewards of the ocean. Maarten’s sculpture Delicate Balance and Heartless, created in 1988, represent the peril the whales face and our ability to affect that fate.

Bob Wright is an incredible Patron of the Arts.  His gift of Painters at Painters is a passionate legacy for all who love the arts…. and the Artists who are welcomed every year.

Heartless came to Maarten in a dream.  He’d awakened with whale cries and then was awake himself totally distraught over a vision of a whale with a missing head, and flesh torn away around its heart.  He said the whale was speaking to him.  Heartless, head missing for the extinct whales, heart missing for those species that chose not to carry on, and the delicate flukes of the tail symbolize the precarious condition of those whales that remained.

Right after Heartless, Maarten sculpted Delicate Balance. The hand was carved first, and later a whale would drape over the hand.  This was an emotion packed time as Maarten Schaddelee felt the whales’ plight was ours; what we do to them, we do to ourselves.  Everything is connected and he started to take a closer look at his own beliefs and values.
